Although the country is only gradually opening there are a few exciting things to do in the city.

We're not out of the woods but as the country gradually opens under lockdown Level 2 there are a few social distance-friendly events going down in Joburg that we think you’ll enjoy.

Encounters South African International Film Festival 20- 30 August 2020

Word on the street is that cinemas are getting ready to welcome film buffs back into their halls. If you are one of the many people who are still reluctant to head back out into the world you can still enjoy good film from the comfort of your home. The 22nd annual Encounters Festival is taking place online. “As we adapt to the new reality, we invite you to join us in celebrating remarkable talent and the much-needed coming together of our community,” the organisers say.

Films to look forward to include How to Steal a Country,  a t profile of a political activist Art of Being Human, a tribute to a Jazz artist Listen to My Song, two different views of South Africa with Good Hope and A New Country, and a special selection of short films from veterans and new voices.

Other films you can enjoy  include a film about the Chinese presence in Lesotho Days of Cannibalism, “corruption in Kenya Softie, a communist rebel in 60s Ethiopia Finding Sally, a young man’s journey to rural Kenya The Letter and internet scams in Ghana Sakawa,” the organisers say.

The festival is taking place for free, however space is limited to 400 people per film, so you must book ahead.  Those interested in supporting the arts can donate R50 to support the Festival and keep it alive.

Tigers Milk Quiz Night – Every Wednesday

For those who are rearing go out and explore what it left of the world, Tiger’s Milk in Bryanston hosts a Quiz Night every Wednesday.  The great night out is “complete with a social distancing general knowledge quiz and a sweet 2-for-1 pizza deal, along with all the stringent measures and protocols necessary to ensure your safety,” the organisers say.  To book your spot call 010 286 0105 or email

Virtual RMB Turbine Art Fair 28 August – 2 September 2020,

Unfortunately, the pandemic isn’t over just because we are over it. The safest place to be is still at home, even if you are bursting at the seams to explore the outside world.  There is some good news for Art buffs who are pining for art during lockdown.

This year’s RMB Turbine Art fair will be happening virtually. RMB TAF 2020 will present visionary new projects to the fair, including Tactile Visions, an exhibition of specially curated textile-based artwork from a range of established, mid-career and emerging contemporary artists. RMB TAF 2020 will also showcase presentations of digital and new media-based work and will highlight the careers of select mid-career artists.

Two Full Days of Absolute Beginners Ashtanga Yoga Workshop 29- 30 August 2020
