What to do in Joburg this Spring
The JHBLive guide to getting out of your winter slump
by JHBLive Posted: 2018/08/26
As the sun and the greenery slowly return to the city, it’s time to pack away those stuffy jerseys and get the hell outdoors! Spring has hit the city and there’s loads to do in and around Jozi to celebrate. Check out the JHBLive guide to celebrating Spring in the city.
Go and soak up the sun on a hike
There are loads of hiking and walking trails in and around Jozi. Kick the winter slump by getting outdoors and soaking up the sun at The Melville Koppies, Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens, and more. Check out our full guide to hiking in and around Joburg.
Take a stroll in the park
Joburg’s full of pockets of greenery that are perfect for walking the dogs, having picnics, or reading a good book. Head through to places like Zoo Lake or Emmarentia if you want to kick back next to a cool body of water, or take a stroll through Delta Park, James and Ethel Grey park, or the newly revamped The Wilds for a dose of sun and fresh air. Check out our (old, but reliable) list of Joburg parks.
Embrace the flowers
While you’re busy getting out those floral patterns from your wardrobe, don’t forget to go out and experience some real flowers. Whether you’re checking out the rose gardens at the Botanical Gardens, or you’re picking up a few new plants (or even a succulent or two) at your local plant nursery, be sure to stop and smell the flowers!
Grab some drinks
There’s no better way to bring in Spring than drinks in the sun with friends. Jozi’s filled with loads of outdoor bars and restaurants that allow for a laid-back afternoon spent soaking up the weather. Check out our list of bars to visit this Spring!
Visit your local thrift store
Spring time also means spring cleaning time – that period where everyone’s getting rid of their horded or non-used items, and clothing they don’t wear anymore. If you’re doing a bit of spring cleaning yourself, think about dropping off some of your once-loved items at a thrift, antique or charity store. And if you’re a fan of thrifting or antiquing, be sure to do it now – everyone’s just gotten rid of all their old stuff so there’s loads to rifle through!
Spend a day at the market
Joburgers love a good market! Whether you’re looking for a bite to eat, some drinks and live music, a lively place to get some grocery shopping done, or you’re on the hunt for a bespoke trinket or item of clothing, Jozi’s many markets have got you covered. Head through to Neighbourgoods or Fourways Farmers Market to grab a cocktail and soak up the sun, or get some veggies or artisanal goods at the Bryanston Organic Market and the Keyes Pantry Market. Be sure to check out our guide to Jozi’s many markets.
