Coming to visual art after a career in law, this is the first time thatany of Philippa Levitt's work has been shown on a public platform.

Comingfrom a legal background, she explores issues of justice, both in the narrow sense of the word referring to our judicial system and in the broader sense of fairness and equity.  She draws attention to the inequities in our society and comments on the disjuncture between the ideals of justice and the reality of lives as they are lived in our contemporary society. Her work also deals with the manner in which the press manipulates and conveys this reality to us, using clever semiotics, and in the process desensitizing us to the suffering and brutality.

Levitt uses icing sugar as a medium to reveal this discrepancy between our ideals and reality, initially by covering over a rudimentary corrugated iron shack with the fragile white sugariness of wedding cake icing sugar in an installation entitled 'ENGAGING THE SHADOW'.  In so doing she briefly transformed the façade into a fantasy fairy tale confectionary, only to watch it being consumed several hours later by the children of the community, returning it to its makeshift corrugated iron crudeness and revealing once again the true underlying reality. She more recently has used icing sugar to cover over disturbing headlines about the xenophobia and attempts in so doing to make them 'palatable.'

Levitt's work is refreshingly unique, combining some profoundly challenging social issues with innovative new materials in a rich visual mosaic.

The exhibition will be opened by Cyril Coetzee at 18h00 on 1 April 2009. Please join us for a glass of wine.  The artist will host a walkabout on the 4th April at 11am.
