Llewelyn and Past Experiences walked around Newtown on Sunday, following the beautiful art that litters its streets and learning the difference between public art and graffiti.

Graffiti by artist Mars. This is his tag - a unique name that a graffiti artist goes by.

This was the winning piece during the Back to the City festival.

Outside the D.Kingsbury store - they've been a supplier of birdseed since 1915 - so artists are allowed to paint but only if they depict birds.

Our self-appointed security detail, Jabu.

Another type of medium used called wheatpaste. Artist is Fin.

Construction site under the Newtown bridge. These pillars have been given to the people of Joburg and were recently re-sprayed during the Back to the City festival. The theme on all these pillars is Freedom.

Artist Mizer.

Example of another medium used sometimes, stencilling.

Artist Mars also uses other mediums such as stickers.

Jo's t-shirt is by a graffiti artist collaboration known as Demolition Squad - their label is available at Shesha stores.

Artist Taps. A well-known artist in Joburg with tags everywhere.

The tour group. It was freezing.
