Jozi usually gets a bad rap from its seaside counterparts, most often about its lack of beaches, forests and other conventionally ‘pretty’ attractions. Those who live in Joburg, however, will know it’s a vibrant city filled with exciting and inventive spaces. It’s also a city that’s bursting at the seams with artists, musicians, and other creative individuals.

To honour both Joburg’s many spaces and creatives, we’ve put together a list of some of our favourite music videos shot in the city and its surrounds.

Card on Spokes – Impala Parlour / Journey To Life

Cape Town-based musician Shane Cooper, aka Card on Spokes, frequently visits Jozi to play gigs at venues like Kitchener’s and The Orbit. In 2017, during one of his trips, he teamed up with a host of Jozi-based creatives to put together the music video for Impala Parlour/Journey To Life. The video kicks off in an empty apartment before heading through rainy streets and ending off with a spectacular dance sequence in one of the city’s mine-dumps.

Cassper Nyovest – Baby Girl

Just before filling up FNB Stadium towards the end of 2017, hip-hop heavyweight Cassper Nyovest filmed the music video for Baby Girl. The video starts off in the city’s signature Jacaranda-lined streets before moving into a nightclub scene that many may recognise as Melville’s Glory nightclub. Check it out below.

Umlilo – Umzabalazo

The music video for Umlilo’s Umzabalazo carries a complex narrative with it, involving two disparate characters in the city of Johannesburg. Throughout the video you’ll see Umlilo move through iconic sites such as the Northcliff Ridge, Constitution Hill, Mary Fitzgerald Square and more. Hit play below to see it for yourself.

AKA feat. K.O – Run Jozi

This one’s a little old, but it’s still a good one! Leave it to AKA to film a video that flaunts Jozi’s more opulent sites alongside the gritty elements of the city. He also closed off the iconic Nelson Mandela bridge to shoot sections of the video, which makes for some truly inspiring shots of the city. Check it out!

Skrillex – Ragga Bomb

Another old one, this music video made headlines when it first came out. During his tour to SA, EDM producer and DJ Skrillex teamed up with local filmmakers to shoot Ragga Bomb. The music video features the city’s ‘street surfers’ – informal waste collectors who traverse the streets in search of recyclables – as well as a crew of pantsula dancers. While the ending may be a bit over-the-top, the music video does craft a compelling narrative, coupled with great visuals. If you haven’t seen it before, check it out below.

Major Lazer & DJ Maphorisa - Particula (ft. Nasty C, Ice Prince, Patoranking & Jidenna)

If the all-star line-up of local and international musicians isn’t enough to get you interested in this track, the music video certainly will. Particula kicks off with skyline shots of the Jozi CBD before moving atop high-rises, through back-alleys and into corner stores – all quintessential Joburg scenes. The video also makes use of a retro filter which sheds a golden light on the city. Give it a watch below.

If we’ve missed out any good ones, let us know in the comments!
