American author Fran Lelbowitz once said that her favourite animal is steak. With that said, it should be perfectly fine to mention that the most popular steakhouses and restaurants only serve the best grade, aged beef. For quite some time now it'd been a great hunt to find a decent - let alone brilliant steak - in the West Rand. Fortunately, the blood hounds can be rounded up and the search called off.
Enter The Diner on Voortrekker Road in Krugersdorp. The bistro sings like a popular lunch time chain restaurant dressed in the quirkiness of a health-eatery in Greenside?except this is carnivore country, with little choice for vegetarians - though it must be mentioned that the salad menu does look tantalising with choices such as the pear and gorgonzola, and Roquefort (French Riviera styled blue cheese) salads. But we're not here to talk about veg food or heart-conscious eating - that is a review left out for another day.
All steaks are grilled to seal in the flavour and served with onion rings and your choice of starch or veg. Prices range from R99 for a 250g rump to a 750g t-bone steak. When asked about the steak, the waitress is sworn to secrecy and the only information she is allowed to give out is that it has been "professionally matured" which is exactly what a huge steak fan such as myself is after. The sirloin melts off the fork and the light touch of good fat spreads like butter across the palate.
The Diner serves up a classic menu at competitive prices with astronomic portions, as the nachos which enough for three people. Whenever you find yourself in the deep west make sure to check out the Diner. The best time would be to pop in for a sun downer with your significant other before dinging into the dinner time menu. Weiss beer is on tap and the cocktail menu sings as deep as the Pacific Ocean. Besides an impressive dinner menu, The Diner has become known as Krugersdorp's breakfast hotspot and once you've been there it isn't hard to see why.
