The food industry is cutthroat yet at the same time very fulfilling. This is a sentiment shared by comedian Tshepo Mogale when we sat down to discuss his foray into the world of entertaining palates and filling up stomachs.
The comedian, also known for his highly successful Kwaito album, Delicious, which he released under the moniker Spykos 11 years ago, says Ribs, Wings N Things was not an overnight success.
He attributes the growing popularity of the brand to an unbridled culinary passion coupled with an incredibly dedicated team. The restaurant first opened its doors in February this year at The Sheds in downtown Jozi. Between then and now the restaurant has grown in leaps and bounds, securing residences at Liquid Chefs (Rosebank), Neighbourgoods (Braamfontein) and Tin Factory (Sandton).
The menu varies each week with dishes inspired by Tshepo's travels. I had the pleasure of trying out their signature ribs, wings and sweet potato fries. Firstly, the ribs were pretty perfect. The flavour, the succulence and the texture all came together in a symphony of culinary greatness. The chicken and sweet potato fries were also enjoyable. I'd even venture as far as saying the sweet potato fries taste much better than regular potato fries. Yep.
When probed, Tshepo divulged that he picked up the rib recipe from some Mongollian guys he met in the Phillipines (although it was perfected right here in Joburg). Other items available on the menu include (but are certainly not limited to) sandwiches and Caribbean coconut and bean rice.
Tshepo's popularity as a comedian with a large online following has inspired a bit of a cult following for the restaurant, with the most popular time slot being Saturday afternoons at The Sheds.
Look out for a permanent store by the end of the year. If you wanna impress your friends I definitely suggest taking them to this food stall. If you have a few more bucks to spend then you can even book them to cater at private events.
