That romantic, secluded getaway place made especially for two and found only in your dreams actually exists. Yes, in real life! It's the Agama cottage found at the Dream Lodge in Magaliesburg and Kelly tried it out:
"This place was made with the idea of a girl's romantic dream getaway in mind." This is how my boyfriend described Agama cottage which is part of The Dream Lodge in Magaliesburg. And that's exactly what it is- a fantasy escape straight out of the imagination. And if the girl is happy, the guy is happy too. That's the rule right?
Agama is a thatched rondavel cottage made just for two and is aptly named after the small, long-tailed lizard which shares its name. These creatures are the only visitors you'll encounter whilst you lounge about outside on the veranda, enjoying sundowners and simply being together. Its situated on a slight hilltop with a vast and lovely view of the Magalies Mountains and Naauwkloof . You and yours are assured complete alone-time from this site. And tell me, when was the last time you've had that?
Couples in complete isolation tend to take full advantage of the fact that they have time and privacy all to themselves. The comments we found in the visitors book inside the cottage vouch for this. Some of the descriptions were a bit unsettling to imagine. There were those who disclosed that they felt like they were on a second honeymoon at Dream Lodge and others who admitted to role-playing as Adam and Eve. Sweet abandon- that's what the private little love nest of a cottage offers those who enter it. Do with it what you will, but perhaps its best to keep the details to yourselves. We couldn't help but giggle at another comment as a couple confessed to being glad to have found a place they could walk around in the same state they came into the world. I don't even want to guess what the guests who didn't write in the visitors book got up to.
Graham and I played 'hide-away' in Agama and its surrounds for the weekend and it was bliss. When we arrived on Friday night we met the owner, Sam, at the main farmhouse and followed her off the beaten track for 1.6km before reaching the silhouette of Agama. This cottage can only be reached by high clearance vehicles, but guests are welcome to park at the Farmhouse and catch a lift with her to the accommodation.
At night Agama exudes a romantic ambiance as it has no electricity so is lit only by candle and lamplight. That soft lighting sets the mood for those romantic dinners and makes everyone look gorgeous too. Breakfast and dinner are brought to you at the cottage at a time stipulated by you. The wholesome meals are delivered by tractor and a beautiful table set for you each time, inside or out. You really get spoilt at this 4-star lodge. The fireplace and ellavated bath inside were two of my favourite features.
During the day, you can choose to do nothing but laze or you can swim in the farmhouse pool, get acquainted with the farm animals and walk or cycle around the wide expanses of the farm. We definitely did our share of all of these.
A girl's dream romantic getaway spot really does exist. Yes, in real life. It's called Agama cottage at Dream Lodge. And it's exactly what the guys have been searching for too.
The Dream Lodge consists of three cottages: Gecko and Agama sleep two people and Chameleon House sleeps 6. I'd recommend bringing along torches or headlamps for additional light if needed. Agama does not have a shower, so be prepared for long, languid baths. Also because there is no electricity there is no fridge in the cottage. Bring a cooler box with ice in it to keep your drinks cold. That's the one thing we missed.
Cost: R740 p/p per night for Agama and Gheko, including breakfast and a three course dinner. Chameleon's prices vary depending on the number guests and catering preferences.
The Dream Lodge is 17km's out of Magaliesburg town and about an hour from Johannesburg.
