Night Of 1000 Drawings In The Afternoon
When I heard that the Night of 1000 Drawings crew were having a doodling session up on the roof of Corner House in town on Sunday evening I thought it might be mildly cool.
It turned out to be extremely cool. I've never seen anything like it. All these hip Joburgers chilling on the roof with their wine bottles and spliffs as the sun went down. It was like Woodstock for designers. The view's great, but more importantly, so was the music. I was expecting lots of electro rock for the skinny jeans brigade, but the selectors mercifully took the Sunday afternoon route, spinning chilled jazz and soul and folky stuff, I heard some Nina Simone, Kate Nash, Richard Cheese and Beck, to name a few.
Pens and paper were available. I submitted a few doodles. Despite the fact that I am more writer than artist, reactions from the cool designer kids were largely favourable. Here's proof that I'm not too bad at the whole doodling thing:
The Night of a Thousand drawings will take place in November. Date and venue to be confirmed. More info: http://www.1000drawings.co.za
