Soweto Gold Brewery

Soweto Gold Brewery

Just off Senokoanyana Street, in Orlando West, you’ll find UBantu Kraal - where the golden fountains of Soweto Gold flow. From the minute I walked in I couldn’t help but have happiness fill me up.

Soweto Gold’s story began in 2012 and since then it has grown to become the second bestselling craft beer in the Northern Suburbs. Tasked with breathing life into a new era in South Africa’s liquor industry and the first regional township-branded clear craft beer, Soweto Gold proudly raises the flag for the ago old craft of ancient African beer brewing.

For now the brewery produces the Superior Lager which is a dark golden medium-bodied premium lager. It’s not too bitter and has the potential to go down perfectly as an all-day drinking beer. There’s also the Apple Ale which is a beer that bursts with the flavour of full bite from a ripe crisp green summer apple. It’s refreshing and goes down well at any time of the day poured over a bed of ice. Both drinks embody what the perfect summer time beverage should taste like – packed with sin and rich flavours. I’ve been told that there are more gems being brewed so watch this space for the flavoursome additions that’ll soon follow.

Aside from just brewing beers UBantu Kraal is also in the business of brewing the answers to your hedonistic desires. The Kasi Beer Garden, which came across as the heart of the brewery, is a sheltered haven. The haven’s main wall is embellished with pictures of South African political, cultural and sporting heroes. Each frame holds a piece of the many personalities that have bled life into our country’s rich character. Then if you’re looking for something a little more private, should you ever decide to serve yourself the treat you deserve with a private function there, then the cider shake or the train are what will put a smile on your face. The cider shake is an isolated portion of the kraal where the golden fountains run wild and you’re free to let lose. If a regular beer garden sounds too mundane for you then you’re welcome to book the old train which has become famous for bachelor and hen parties. And, for each private function you have the option of plenty of added extras; like crazy games, to make sure that your stay is everything you want it to be. Brewery tours are also a really cool and totally worth making a booking for.

The onsite restaurant serves gourmet South African dishes with a twist and a lot of the meals are prepared with a hint of Soweto Gold. Whether you’re a walk-in guest or hosting a private function you are guaranteed to walk-away with a very happy stomach.

Whether you’re there to just kick back and have a drink, welcome the festive season with the best year end function or say goodbye to your single days in style then UBantu Kraal and a Beer or five are the perfect way to do it. It’s a nice alternative to the stiff Northern suburb beer gardens we’ve become accustomed to, it’s truly South African and your chance to get your hands on a beer brewed to perfection.
