Born into a long line of Belgian patisserie masters, Jean Francois Schevenels has arrived on our shores to bring us a real deal patisserie and gourmet Belgian restaurant. The Schevenels have been famous for their baking prowess throughout Europe since the 18th Century - raking in the Pastry World Cup in 1989. Today, at Athol Square, you'll find the Schevenels legacy thriving at The Liege Café.
Jean Francois starts his day at 4am every morning to ensure that his customers get only the finest, freshest baked goods. Using chocolate, teas and coffees imported from Paris and Belgium, there's no skimping on quality or any sort of ooh la la. Jean Francois says, with deadpan seriousness I might add, that he serves the best coffee and tea in the world.
Known by the Sandton community as more of a breakfast/brunch sort of place, The Leife Café, named after Liege in Belgium, has a full dinner menu that features both traditional and modern Belgian meals. On the top of the list are steaks and duck. Cooked to perfection, the Steak Dijonaisse is a melt-in-the-mouth experience with a massive side portion of French fries (obvs). For breakfasts and brunches, you'll be able to enjoy an assortment of real Belgian waffles smothered in chocolate, blueberries, bananas and the like.
Getting The Leige Café up and running has been a frightful challenge for Jean Francois since, apparently, South Africans aren't yet quite accustomed to proper Belgian food but he's hopeful that, in the next few months, his menu will be on the tip of every Joburger's tongue.
If you're hungry for a little food, culture and class then The Liege café is your spot. Coupled with superb service and food, it's only a matter of time and taste that'll send it far up the ladder of places to eat in Joburg so get in there while it's still hot.
