Al Hamras Serves Fast Food With Street Cred

Get street-wise about good food

Situated on the lively Church Street of the bustling Mayfair suburb where Asian, Middle Eastern and local cultures and cuisines co-exist beautifully, Al Hamra's take on street food is reminiscent of the food stalls on the busy roads of Bangkok, Thailand, or Kuala Lampur, Malaysia.

Specialising in Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi foods, the restaurant and take-away prepares meat and chicken dishes on a hot fire outside the store, where patrons can watch their food being cooked to perfection. Admittedly, the décor and set-up of the restaurant are modest but what Al Hamra lacks in furnishings it makes up for in succulent and delicious food.

I always order the same thing when I visit the restaurant: Chicken Tikka - a dish where various spices are mixed and used to marinate the chicken before it's cooked in an oven or over a fire until it's tender and crisp. Served with chips and salad, Al Hamra's is a particularly delicious melt-in-your-mouth meal. The menu is varied - with different biryani, grills, burgers, curries and Chinese food available - and the prices are very reasonable; with a meal setting you back between R30 and R70.

For the street food experience minus the infamous "Dehli-belly", Al Hamra is a winner.
