70 Juta Street Design Hub
Sunday 7th November marked the official opening of 70 Juta Street in Braamfontein. This new, super-trendy hub of restaurants and retail spots played host to chocolate fountains, DJs and good times, amongst other things. Within a stone's throw of Kitchener's Carvery, where (if you didn't already know) one can go to dance the night away; this gentrified nook is fast becoming Johannesburg's next hot spot.
70 Juta Street showcases South African design talents across the board - from fashion, to flowers, to fine art. It's playing home to Guillotine designer Lisa Jaffe's new pop-up retail space, Summer Reign, as well as design duo Dokter and Misses' workshop and "Co-Op" Gallery space, shared with What if the World. There is also a fantastic restaurant, called Post, worth visiting for sammies, breakfasts and home-made ice-cream.
The fabulous guest list included South African designers Jaques Van Der Watt of Black Coffee fame and Bradley Kirshenbaum of LoveJozi, not to mention South African trend guru Dion Chang, amongst the array of artists, fashionistas and food lovers present at the celebration. Champagne flowed and chocolate-dipped strawberries where the order of the day.
"Good Afternoon", as the launch was named, signified a distinct victory for Jozi creatives who constantly seek to experience the electric vibe of the melting pot that is downtown Johannesburg. The opening also marked over a decade's worth of reconstruction of the previously rundown business district.
