Love poetry? Good, because the annual Izimbongi Poetry Festival kicks off at the University of Joburg this week! Check out the details below.

The festival opening kicks off with Professor Keorapetse Kgositsile’s citation by Phillippa Yaa De Villiers, followed by the UJ Arts Academy poetry students’ production Behind these Eyes. Professional poets Sabelo Soko, Vangile Gantsho, Siphokazi Jonas and Mandi Vundla wrap up the evening.

DAY 1 :: 26 SEP
Poetry students, Phumelelokuhle Ngidi and Ketumetse Tlhako, get the evening’s event underway, followed by renowned spoken-word artists Eugene Skeef and Vangile Gantsho.

DAY 2 :: 27 SEP
The Top 3 UJ poetry students set the tone for performances by poetry students Refiloe Khumalo and Sbusiso Dladla followed by professional poets Sabelo Soko and Siphokazi Jonas.

DAY 3 :: 28 SEP
UJ Arts & Culture poetry students’ production, The Blues will start the evening followed by readings by the Top 5 WordNSound poets. Performances also include poetry students Terrance Valaysha and Thama Khumunalo and professionals Mandi Vundla and Phillippa Yaa De Villiers.

Winners of the High School Poetry Competition will be announced, followed by a marathon of words under the command of Sabelo Soko, Vangile Gantsho, Siphokazi Jonas, Mandi Vundla and Phillippa Yaa De Villiers.
