Barton's Folly
Fresh country air and fabulous food.
I discovered a real gem this weekend. A fabulous fine-diningestablishment out in the countryside. Getting worn out by the Joburghussle and bussle, I decided to get away from the big city for theweekend. Magaliesburg, only a chilled hour and a half out of Joburg,
seemed like a fabulous idea. And I was in no way disappointed with my
escape from the big city?
Joy
Alberts, who professes to be a complete country bumpkin, is the totally
glamorous and incredibly nice owner of Barton's Folly Restaurant. This
is without a doubt, the best restaurant I've been to in months. Only
40min from Fourways, it's not far from Jozi at all but seated on the
beautiful wooden deck overlooking a picturesque stream and cliff face,
the stress of city life felt far far away.
The
style and ambience is English colonial with a modern flare. Faerielight
candles lead the way up the path to the grand, country house.
Beautiful chandeliers create a soft light and a cozy atmosphere. I
quickly realize that this place is no dodgy country pub but a unique
fine dining establishment. The mezzanine level is the perfect space for
a romantic dinner with low lighting, candles and a single red rose on
each table.
Genuine
photographs from the early 1900s hang on the walls. Joy's grandparents
have been given the honour of marking the entrance to the toilets.
The
food is wonderful. Beautifully presented and full of flavour. Joy and
her fantastic chef, change the menu weekly so that each meal is
prepared with passion and fresh ingredients. I think this is a great
idea, no hashing out of the same meals over and over again?
Barton's Folly is incredibly special. I will definitely be heading back there for more delicious food and relaxing, country air.
