The Joy of Koi

Eat, pay, love at Joburg's best Asian restaurant.

As an absolute sushi-lover, I've been on a quest to find the best in the city. Some 89 California rolls later I finally found my solace. Situated in the trendy food quarter at the Firs in Rosebank, Koi offers an authentic, refreshing take on Asian cuisine.

While it has that up-market, chic vibe, the dining experience is relaxed and welcoming, unlike the many over-priced restaurants in the Northern suburbs. We started our meal with (you guessed it!) sushi! Since there were a few of us, we ordered several types including nigiri, sashimi, maki rolls and fashion sandwiches - which were all delightful. For my main I ordered the wok-charred beef fillet, which came with mash potatoes and greens - well presented and absolutely delectable! My boyfriend's Koi chicken curry was equally delicious. After hanging myself up on the starters and main I had to pass on dessert, but the menu was varied and intriguing? yet another excuse to return!

While the restaurant is a tad pricey, it's definitely worth the splurge. With attentive waiters and waitresses; a lively atmosphere; unique décor (both inside the restaurant and the outside area on the square); and yummy food; it makes for a great night out.
