Cornutis, Illovo : Best Pizza on the Planet

A pizza's a pizza's a pizza. It's peasant food with First-World pretensions, and embellishments- a gilded bread roll. That's what I'd always assumed until now.

Run for the last 22 years by David Verti, and his wife, Mara, in the kitchen, Cornuti's serves up Italian food as God intended. Glorious pizza, home made pasta, organic, fresh ingredients, all brought together with a taste and sumptuousness that makes you wonder why Italians stay so slim and trim (generally), with all this fine food in their culture.

Unlike the bare bones, no illusions fare of Renato's, Cornuti's is not that cheap, to put it mildy. Someone had to pay for all those solid marble table tops. Pizzas start off at R70, and a modest main course will clock in at about R130. A bottle of wine will set you back from anything to R180 to an eye-watering R660.

The relatively mild extravagance aside, Cornuti's is a great 2nd date place. Good food, on the tasteful side of ostentatious, and brilliant- not simpering- service.
