Cure the Monday Blues

photos by ImaniKa Kotane

It was on return after a week in Cape Town that I realised why I love Jozi best.
I was sitting at this place in Melville, at a session called the Monday Blues. Somewhere between a proper gig and an open mic. Anything goes, there is folk and jazz and poetry and rock and I realise that this is the kind of eclectic, truly African vibe that Cape Town is too busy trying to follow Europe to capture.

Ko'spotong Melville, in case you haven't been there before, is a chilled restaurant, bar and live music venue. Food is as cheap as your local Greek-owned corner cafe, and much better. It's in the same vein though, with the archetypally local kota being the speciality.

But it's the vibe that's important. And the music. At Monday Blues I have seen some of the best talent in Mzansi lately. Soweto rock band Organised Distortion, folk singer Bongisiwe Mabandla and poet Mac Manaka to name a few.

It may be in a new venue, but Monday Blues is nothing new. Legend has it that none other than larger-than-life rapper Waddy Jones cut his teeth there.

It's something to experience.

Monday Blues takes place at Ko'spotong, Main Road, Melville, every Monday night. To find out what's on, check out: http://mondayb.blogspot.com
