The "we" she's referring to are girls/ladies; mostly gay, some straight; the "I'm not gay but my girlfriend is"-type reasoning - make up your own mind. Kerry Knowles of RSVP Solutions has become known amongst the party peoples of Jozi as the founder/organiser of Jozi's 1stFriday do which takes place every first Friday of each month; catering to ladies of the "othered' sexual preference from across Gauteng. Why "gay girls"? To offer a space in which gay girls can meet-up/hook-up/dress-up with like-minded people and feel free and comfortable to do so. With a database of up to five thousand girls, "I was bored with what was out there for girls and I wanted to offer something classy," Kerry ensures that Jozi's fairest party in absolute style.
It's 1stFriday's pre-Pride party and I'm intrigued; a black cocktail-dress, armed with camera man and crew, we hit St. Tropez, this week's venue for 1stFriday; the thought of up to four hundred girls dancing away with careless abandon taunting each one of us. About the door were a bunch of rather good-looking guys eager to get in: 1stFriday's a 'girls-only' party; and these guys would have to hover about the red carpet or go somewhere else. If you've never been to a lesbian party you're sure to feel a little disorientated or re-orientated; hitting the bar never, and I mean never ever, have I seen a club so full of ladies, some hot, few of the high-profile calibre and then the general mix of the locker-room. The music was pumping and the girls were doing their thing-thang hard on with breaks to the bar and balcony outside. Now, about the bar: a total rip-off, though this is a factor beyond the control of the 1stFriday crew. About the music: most loved it, that commercial electronic sound being a party starter of some kind - more of that "these boots were made for dancing"-type reasoning.
Hook-ups: if you aint hooking-up at this party, check your weave girl. Ever wonder what girls do when the boys aren't around, ever wonder what girls do when they know they are in a space to do that thing that they want to do? Go figure: I kissed a girl and I liked it!
