Go Go Bar
A great reason to go-go to Newtown
Thank the god of sex, drugs and rock n'roll!! Joburg has an awesome, new, quirky night-time hangout! The Go Go Bar is fantastic?exactly whatthe slightly left-of-centre Joburg crowd has been waiting for.
The concept is based on the owner's love for secondhand furniture, bric 'n brac and scrapyard gems. The bar, just off Mary Fitzgerald square in Newtown, is a beautiful old three-story building. The club is filled with a mish-mash of 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s junk (and I use the word junk with much affection and admiration).
As far as the music goes, this club is not into hiring out top DJs for extortionate amounts of money who will inevitably hash out the same shit night after night. The guys in charge of the music here are just interesting guys who love interesting, different types of music. Just as an example, the lead singer from Desmond and the Tutus will be djing at the club soon. The music generally played is funk, disco and afro-beats along with all sorts of music from the different eras?as Shaun Baskind, the owner says "We'll play anything except House".
Shaun,
like the rest of us, was tired of the Joburg clubbing scene and after
more than two years of hard work, has realised his dream of creating
something totally different. Shaun was one of the original owners of
Tokyo Star. Kevin, his partner is a big events organiser who has been
in the industry for over a decade. He has been involved with Arts Alive
and has brought out the likes of Mr Scruff and Jazzanova to Joburg.

The
Go Go Bar is going to be hosting live music on a regular basis as well
as art exhibitions. Last Friday Louis Mhlanga, an old skool jazz
great, played a tribute to Jimi Hendrix along with a set of his own.
This coming weekend Go Go Bar will host a five-piece Brazilian hip-hop
band. Shaun's idea is to provide an eclectic, interesting mix of
entertainment to the Joburg party scene. I am suitably impressed.
