Walking the Braamfontein Spruit

So my boyfriend decided to take me on a hike the other day but we ended up getting a bit tipsy the night before and didn't get up early enough to spend an hour and a half driving to the Magaliesburg. We were still in the mood though having bought picnic stuff the day before, so we decided to walk the Braamfontein spruit with a few friends.

The walk officially starts at Emmerentia dam and winds its way between the neighbourhoods of the near North. Think Victory Park, Delta Park, Craighall and you can keep going all the way to Rivonia! The landscape changes along the route so wear a hat and sunblock. You are accompanied by the flowing river the whole way but unfortunately it isn't clean enough to drink or swim in (apparently it was back in the day my boyfriend tells me. He's kind of old ;)  If you forget any supplies there are some quick shops you can detour to along the route.

There were a few pleasant surprises along the route like horses grazing across the river where we picnicked and some water feature thingies. It seems like the mountain bikers have heard about the trail too so if that's your thing it looks like fun. Try going while everything is still green and lush.

I lived in the northern suburbs and I used to spend entire days of my school holidays swimming, fishing, and snorkelling in this river! And I'm only 27! In later years, I was also mugged several times so bare that in mind when you plan your trip...

What do you say?
