Opening of Flood Gates at Vaal Dam
03/02/10
The Department of Water Affairs is closely monitoring the rising levels of the Vaal Dam amid the heavy rains in the Gauteng province. This after sluice gates were opened last week to load shed water after it was found that the dam was 105% full.
The opening of the gates commenced at the Weekend as the rains continued to raise the dam levels.
The heavy downpours have also affected the Bloemhof Dam in the North West Province which is currently at 112% full.
Communities along the area of the Vaal Orange River System are warned to stay clear of the river at this time. Recreational activities such as canoeing, boating etc should not be undertaken until further notice.
According to weather forecast more rain is still expected in the Vaal catchment and more water may be released
