The farmers market in Melville

Fresh and organic Sundays

When last did you net a bag of freshly plucked Basil leaves for amere R5.00?  Never?  Me neither, until recently that is, when I foundmyself up at sparrows trawling Melville's newest retail addition - The Farmers Market.

Melville is famed for its bevy of bars and restaurants, not to mention its boisterous nightlife, but dig deep and you'll find that residents of this trendy suburb are not just a bunch of lusty bon vivant's devoted to life's hedonistic pursuits.  Which is why I'm a little perplexed as to why it's taken an age for an initiative like The Farmer's Market to catch on amongst socially conscious Melville'ites.

Although this laudable market is far from bustling - with only a handful of stall owners delivering their patters and peddling their wares - promise is evident in the quality of the produce, specifically the green stuff on show.  Wild rocket, buoyant basil, curly lettuce, tender baby spinach leaves, and fair trade coffee beans line trestle tables and ooze crispy freshness.  An added allure is the price - you can pick up the veggies for a song, which is certainly welcome relief in today's "belt-tightened" and plaintive economic climate.

Presently all the stalls are sustained by food stuffs, bar the fresh flower section.  Apart from the veggies, you'll find frivolous fairy cakes, organic ice-creams, succulent olives, wines, fig preserves, homemade ginger-beer, and creamy cheeses.  I also spied a small stall flogging quirky homemade ginger-bread houses - which really brought the fairytales flooding back to the fore!

Conveniently situated directly above Bamboo - perfect for a quick cup of java to get the early-morning muscles moving -  The Farmer's Market kicked off on Saturday past at the obscenely early hour of 7am (although one bleary eyed farmer from majestic Magaliesburg admitted she'd been in the trenches since 5am!)

As I strolled back to my wagon, arms laden with enough fresh produce to last a week, for a mere R25, it occurred to me that when it comes to ferreting about farmer's markets, the early bird truly does catch the worm!

The Farmers' Market at Bamboo in Melville is held on the first Saturday of each month. All produce is grown naturally or organically, meats are raised humanely on pasture, farmstead cheeses are handmade, eggs and poultry are from free-range fowl. There are fresh flowers, baked goods straight from heaven, great wine and fabulous olive products. Open from 7am until all the fresh produce has sold out - so get there early. It is located on the roof upstairs at Bamboo, 53 Rustenburg Road, Melville.
