I've heard so many government officials preaching the spirit of volunteerism in our land. And I've seen the same people in the frontline of corruption taking away the means to help people in need. It is this corruption that has made a lot of the people wary of lending a helping hand. If you are one of these people, don't get too cynical - there are still individuals out there who are genuinely helping the needy.

They are not a N.G.O. They don't even have a name. They're merely a group of students who've taken it upon themselves to feed the homeless.

The idea for the feeding scheme started one afternoon, a student was driving in Melville and a homeless person asked her for money. Like most of us do, she told the beggar she didn't have any. But later that afternoon as she was enjoying a meal at a restaurant, the fact that just a few feet away from where she was sitting, was a hungry child who had no choice but to beg while she has a choice between eating at a restaurant or at home cut her deeply. The next day she told her friends at school about the incident. The feeding scheme was born.

The group is made up of eight members who on a weekly basis, raise funds to buy ingredients and packaging to feed as many people as possible with the money raised. They drive around every Saturday through Melville, Auckland Park, Mayfair and Braamfontein, and give sandwiches, juice and a snack to the homeless they come across. The group feed about 60 people every Saturday, twice the number of people they fed when they started.

The sad part is that the number of people to feed increases every week and it gets harder to feed all of them due to limited resources. So, if you can, lend a hand.

Definitely a great, powerful initiative! Would also like to get involved...and I know many more that would! This is an important opportunity to meet the (basic) needs of our society and essentially, we should all lend a hand to help those less fortunate and work together to uplift this country.
