Ephraim Ngatane was a talented artist who died in 1971, nearly aged 33, from tuberculosis. Ngatane's work, which is now on display, ranges from documentary realism to abstract paintings. His art always portrayed life in Soweto, from its dispair to its hope and from its beggars to its barbershops. Ngatane's paintings detail his struggle of living in Soweto.

While studying at the Polly Street Art Centre between 1952-1954, under Cecil Skotnes, he developed his unique from of art and also experimented with water colour and oil paint. Though his work is different to other artists of his time it remains emotive and appealing.
