Wakey wakey

Brunch lovers understand that when the desire for a spectacular egg hits, it hits hard.

We pulled some of our best brunch experiences out of our reviews to give you a quick guide to exceptional brunch in the city.

The Federal

The Federal brunch menu is bursting with favourable picks that span across a variety of tastes. For those with an unrelenting sweet tooth there’s the peanut butter French toast. Naturally, Chef Diack, the behind this delicious operation, got mad creative and has added interesting options like Dutched Flapjacks which are apple flapjacks served with haloumi, crispy boar bacon or southern fried chicken and spiced butterscotch. Sound like something that you want to try?

2 Patachou Parktown North

This colourful patisserie in Parktown North opened not too long ago but somehow already has the air of a settled and incredibly loved regular’s spot. My friends and I were greeted and seated under a tree by a brilliant waiter named Zinzi and then we swiftly fell in love with the menu. There were croissants filled with scrambled eggs and fresh salmon. Pastries served with a perfect cup of coffee. Traditional croque monsieurs and madames and salads and sandwiches and French dreams galore.

We all decided on eggs for our hangovers and quickly learned that any breakfast that doesn't include potato croquettes from now on is not worth our damn time. The fluffly little puffs were perfection and the portion so generous that not one of us could finish all of them on our plate.

3 Bolton Road Collection

The Bolton Road Collection's brunch menu is one that has even the pickiest squads covered. Settle in on the bustling corner of Bolton Road and get your feast on. They're offering up classics like Salmon Benedict, Shakshuka, stuffed croissants and something called 'bacon tots'. We're in.

Find them at 2 Bolton Road, Corner Bolton Road & Jan Smuts, Rosebank.

If you're in the mood to be surrounded by colour and beauty on these chilly (potentially dreary) Joburg days, have a lazy and quirky brunch at Glenda's in Dunkeld. You're in for simple, but beautifully executed brekkie's.

Find them at Hyde Square, Corner Jan Smuts Avenue and North Road, Hyde Park.

If you're in the mood for pastry (when aren't you?) get to Paul in Melrose Arch. After the hype surrounding their launch in Jozi, the verdict is in and people say they just keep getting better and better. Sip on amazing coffee while devouring their freshly baked delights.
