Anyone in the know about good Portuguese food (usually the Portuguese themselves) knows you can find it in the South, boet. One particular family restaurant has been serving up the best prawns and espetada in Joburg since 1975. But to go all the way to the South? Mission.
All the deliciousness of Portuguese food I crave is on their menu: all the Prego perfection, the melt-in-your-mouth chicken and a divine selection of seafood … Yeah, I'm gushing, but hot damn, the Portuguese can cook!
The new kid in town is modern and neat with minimalistic décor and a touch of Portugal in the art on the walls as opposed to hundreds of neckties hanging from the rafters and detailed knick knacks everywhere (resembling a Portuguese mama's kitchen, I imagine).
The family business vibes are clearly in evidence in Sabor too - the owner will make you feel like a long lost friend while his lovely wife cooks up a pasta in the kitchen. You'll chat to strangers and leave later than you intended and nobody will judge your loudness after a few rounds at the well-stocked bar. This is my kinda dining!
Find Sabor in the Linksfield Terrace Centre, Linksfield Road, Edenvale, Johannesburg.
