Tucked away at the end of Melville's 7th Street, Lucky Bean is the kind of place where time seems to stand still and you get lost in the wonderful food and languid atmosphere.
We whiled away an entire Sunday afternoon there recently and it was fabulous. The décor is magical, and between the DJ spinning his trippy tunes and the warm wind that must have come off the back of the tropical storm in KZN, it felt almost as is we were on an island holiday. So naturally we had to have cocktails. The plum and apple daiquiri is sinfully good and at R40, pretty reasonable too.
We all opted for some variation of their burgers, which came highly recommended. My Lucky Bean burger (the patty includes sundried tomatoes, peppercorns and garlic, and it comes with a fair lashing of pesto) was a touch dry but otherwise very tasty, and the chickpea patty in pita was declared delicious as well. The clear winner though was the ostrich burger - the patty stuffed with Bobotie rice and topped with mushroom and bacon sauce was divine. R75 may seem steep for a burger but they are massive and extremely filling - I could only manage about half of mine!
There were so many divine looking desserts that we each ordered something different so we could try a bit of everything. The baklava was fabulous, and the homemade ice cream perfect for a summer's day, but the chocolate and pistachio torte stole the show. Service is as relaxed as the atmosphere, so if you're in a hurry this may not be the place for you - but once you start eating, you'll forget where you need to be anyway.
