Jozi’s Greek Street Food Fix
Those of us who have been fortunate enough to stumble, drunk, into the queue of Soul Souvlaki at a day festival in Jozi, or come across the flagship store on the beautiful streets of Maboneng, know how delicious and special this Greek experience is.
Just under a month ago, the second Soul Souvlaki store opened in Craighall. Hiding in an other-worldly courtyard setting on Jan Smuts Avenue, you’ll find the black awning and inviting stools of Soul Souvlaki, with equally cute Chinese and Italian offerings on either side of it.
I went into the shop, and was taken by how organised and gorgeous the space was despite being so, so tiny. A lovely window frames a small two-seater table, and as far as in door seating goes- that’s as good as it gets. However, on beautiful Jozi winter days that have us chasing sunbeams, the high tables and stools outside offer a lovely and communal home under the trees.
Despite the wide range of options on the menu (plates and platters all designed around offerings of chicken, lamb, bifteki or haloumi) I chose a lamb souvlaki. The lamb was cooked to perfection and flavourful. The tomato, onion and rocket all perfectly fresh, the pita bread just soft enough to make you weep and firm enough to hold its shit together. Greeks are picky people in general- and when it comes to food we’re an absolute nightmare. The fact that I was not the only Greek in this Greek restaurant on a Tuesday afternoon shows just how very fuckin’ delicious and authentic Soul Souvlaki is.
Find Soul Souvlaki at 339 Jan Smuts Ave, Craighall Park, Randburg.
They’re open Tuesday to Sunday from 11am - 7:30pm.
