It's my pool. Don't you dare soak up my sun, bathe in my water, or wear that draped sarong you picked up in Bali. I've been going to the Zoo Lake Pool since I was old enough to make urine donations in the kiddie's section. Now it's my happy place, my favourite spot in Joburg, so don't come here.
You don't want to spend time at this hidden gem that's frequented mostly by the Parkview and Westcliff old money jollies and testosterone-stuffed water polo heavies. This 8-bucks-a-swim, 30-by-30-metre open air pool that's stuffed between Joburg's Parks both average and exquisite. It's the best place to go if you want to observe the "1-Percenters" of Westcliff Hill and lie on lush green grass in a space that the sun just doesn't want to leave.
Who would even be interested in that?
Don't come anywhere near this relic of Old Joburg where a secret network of veteran swimmers will tacitly resent the surge of newbie occupiers showing up to steal their quiet corner away from the world. But if you do come here, do so with reverence, and we'll ambivalently invite you in.
Don't go there. It's amazing.
