Past Experiences Provide An Art Tour In The City
The inner city may not be beautiful from every angle but the public art tour opens your eyes to appreciating its many painted faces
Joburg, City of Gold, Joeys, Egoli, Jozi, The Big Banana; these are all names we're used to hearing, but what about Joburg; City of Art?
When I was invited to go on a walking tour of the public art in Jozi CBD I was sceptical, but the day turned out a lot more exciting than I expected.
The tour was run by the Past Experiences tour group - the original inner city tour guides. It kicked off in Newtown and had us wandering all over town. We walked all the way to the Library Gardens and Ghandi Square, and back through the mining district along Main Street. The tour was about 2 hours long.
We often forget that Joburg is a city that is beautiful to walk through. Public art is all around too, some of which is instantly recognisable. There are statues and wall-murals commissioned by various 'beautification' projects as well as more informal art; graffiti, adverts and amateur art. The buildings add to the atmosphere; a strange blend of imposing Afrikaner "architecture" and gorgeously designed buildings that span the ages and eras. The city is a strange mixture of the derelict and broken, and the new and up-and-coming.
All in all it was great to get up off the couch and take a walk through the vibrant and invigorating centre of our city. It reminded me why I love Joburg so much, and made me feel far more in touch with the city than I have for ages. A double thumbs up to the Past Experiences team, who made my Saturday morning just that much more enjoyable.
