Uncapped Home Fibre to be Provided to Townships
Vumatel to provide affordable, uncapped home fibre to townships

Vumatel, one of South Africa’s largest fibre-to-the-home operators, is in the process of offering 100Mbit/s uncapped fibre in townships across South Africa for just R89 per month.
Over the course of the next few months, Vumatel will commence with a pilot project in Johannesburg’s Alexandra township where it aims to provide every home with uncapped internet access.
If the project is a commercial success, the company hopes to expand its services to Diepsloot and greater Gauteng, eventually spreading to townships across Durban and Cape Town too.
In an interview with TechCentral, Vumatel CEO Neil Schoeman explains that unlike traditional fibre-to-the-home, fibre will be strung along poles rather than trenched, but each connected home will be able to experience uncapped internet access at an affordable rate.
“If we prove this model in Alex, and we have other players starting to do this, then all 35m people living in metro areas are reachable by fibre,” says Schoeman. “A child in Greenside and a child in Alex will have the same essential opportunity for access to information.”
