This Friday 27 April marks 24 years since the country’s first democratic elections took place. Since the national holiday falls on a Friday this year, we’ve also got a long weekend to look forward to. As usual, we’ve put together our guide to the best events taking place in the city. Check ‘em out below.
Test your knowledge at the Milk Bar

Dance the night away at Rub a Dub
This Thursday sees the return of Rub a Dub! On the Lineup they’ll have two of the Vaal's best, DJ Pepe (Rub-A-Dub Resident) and Saheed representing the Music&You crew. Basmnt from TRNSD Sound will also be holding it down on the decks and DJ Teedo will be setting the dancefloor on fire as always. Mr Phixxit of the Berlin Boys will also be making sure that the dancefloor stays packed. Details this way.
Feel the heat with En Fuego
As usual, The Orbit’s got a night of musival revelry lined up, this time featuring Afro-Cuban salsa ensemble, En Fuego. See them live and on fire this Thursday night. Details here.
Catch some Zimbabwean rock n roll at Rumours
Zim's top two live bands 'Evicted' and 'Flying Bantu' are both headed to Gauteng. The acts will be at Rumours Rock City on Thursday 26th April for a pre-Freedom Day party. Evicted are best described as Afro-Rock with elements of rock, punk-rock and Afro-funk, and Flying Bantu is best described as 'Afro-Fusion' – fusing elements of rock, reggae, funk and jazz. Enjoy live hip-hop in the city
Hip-hop, graffiti, and good times. It’s all going down at this year’s Back to the City festival at Mary Fitzgerald Square. This year’s event sees Cassper Nyovest, Riky Rick, Nadia Nakai, Yugen Blakrok and a whole lot more. Details this way!
Celebrate Freedom Day at Good Luck Bar
As an ode to Sarafina, His & Hers Jams brings together Motel Mari, The Brother Moves On, and Urban Village. The party is a celebration of 24 years of the promise of freedom coming tomorrow. DJs will also be on the decks, and the drinks will be flowing. More details here.
Get jazzy in Sophiatown
Sophiatown – the mix operates out of a heritage centre in the historic area of Sophiatown. This Friday they’re kicking off Freedom Day with a performance by none other than jazz veteran Abbey Cindi as part of their regular Sophiatown Jazz Encounters series. Details over here.
Go market mad at Keyes
The Pantry Market at Keyes, which takes place once a month on Saturday mornings and specialises in small-batch, artisanal products, is back this April. The event will bring everything from olive oil and honey to fresh produce, charcuterie, confectionery, sourdough bread and cut flowers. Don your weekend best and go do some artisanal shopping! Get trendy with Nicola Cooper
SAFF Compact is having its first installation on the 28th April 2018. This first SAFF Compact will be focusing on Trend Forecasting, presented by the knowledgeable Trend Forecaster Nicola Cooper. Cooper is the founder of Nicola Cooper & Associates. As a trend analyst, she melds her observations of time and patterns with her expertise, and ever-expanding research, to chart trends and behavior on the hyperlocal and international scale. Feel good at Joziburg Lane
The Feel Good Series is a monthly day party that turns up every last Saturday of the month at Joziburg's newest rooftop venue. JAZZ HEAT proudly presents Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz 2018 Thandi Ntuli. Just fresh from releasing her second album EXILED, Thandi Ntuli is a multi-talented artist with a voice that matters. She will be joined for this performance at the Victoria Yards by Sthembiso Bhengu on trumpet, Amaeshi Ikechi on bass and Siphiwe Shiburi on drums. Indulge in some handcrafted creativity at KAMERS/MAKERS
SA’s favourite travelling circus of artisan creativity is back in Jozi in the last week of April – in a great new venue. This year they’ll be at St David’s Inanda, just a short distance from Sandton City. The treasure trove of fashion, jewellery, homeware, décor and general lifestyle has become a must-do on the Gauteng calendar, with this 5-day festival of proudly local design breaking records year on year.
