This week sees the opening of the much-anticipated Sanlam Portrait Awards Exhibition.

Taking place at UJ’s Art Gallery, the exhibition runs from 7 February to 7 March and will showcase some of the best portraiture in the country.

Taking home the top prize for this year’s competition is Kate Arthur’s Genna and Felix, a double portrait renders in oil paints.

All 40 works were selected by an independent panel of judges, including the UK-based Peter Monkman. Monkman was assisted by Nkule Mabaso, curator of the Michaelis Galleries at the University of Cape Town, and Pretoria-based retired lecturer, Carl Jeppe.

The exhibition will also be seen in Durban, Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein, Knysna and George throughout 2018.
