The Newtown trail was created in 2010 by Urban Genesis, which manages the Newtown Improvement District, to encourage visitors to walk through the rich and colourful Newtown precinct and learn more about the history of key landmark buildings from illustrated story panels.
By taking the Newtown Heritage Trail visitors will discover, with the help of trained site guides or a self-guided tour with the help of an informative brochure, the hidden histories, intriguing characters, dramatic events and richly textured cultural heritage that make the Newtown story so compelling.
They will learn the stories behind the birth of Newtown, Kippies, the Potato Sheds and Railway Sidings, the Market Theatre, and Mary Fitzgerald Square.
The tour includes the Electric Workshop, Turbine Hall, SAB World of Beer, the Workers' Museum and Newtown's cultural organisations: the Dance Factory, Moving into Dance, Bassline, Market Photo Workshop, Artist Proof Studio, and Market Lab. And don't forget Museum Africa, the Workers' Museum, Sci-Bono Discovery Centre ... and the majestic, exquisitely restored Turbine Hall.
