5th Word N Sound Poetry Festival
Making its return, for its fifth instalment, to the cultural heartbeat of Jabulani, the Word N Sound International Youth Poetry Festival brings with it the splendour or poetry.Word N Sound Poetry and Music Series is a podium for the expression of spoken word poetry, not so much a commercial venture as an attempt to make a positive impact on the lives of the youth.
This year the festival welcomes international Kenyan born Somali-British poet Warsan Shire. Warsan has been featured in Poetry Review, Wasafiri, Magma, and in anthologies such as The Salt Book of Younger Poets and Ten: The New Wave. Her first book Teaching my Mother How to Give Birth was published by flipped eye in 2012, in 2013 she won the Inaugural African Poetry Prize and in 2014 she was selected as Queensland, Australia’s poet in residence where she spent six weeks collaborating with the Aboriginal Centre for Performing Arts. Most recently, she was appointed as the first Young Poet Laureate for London in 2014. On Saturday you have the opportunity to have Warsan’s glorious spoken word poetry wash over you.She will be joined by the vibrant presence of Kabomo, Flex Boogie, Mandi Poefficient Vundla, Koleka Putuma, Neil Atlantis, Chef and The Kitchen for what will be an explosive night of good all-round enlightening entertainment. There will be workshops on the 1st and 2nd of October as well prior to the explosion that is set to take place on the 3rd of October.
